Holden exhaust systems: what owners need to know

Holden exhaust systems are not a one-size-fits-all category. The flex pipe is the first thing to go on most Commodores. It sits between the front pipe and the catalytic converter and absorbs engine movement. Replacing the factory cast-iron manifolds with a set of equal-length steel headers on an LS motor requires matching the collector diameter to the rest of the system. A 1-5/8-inch primary header running into a 3-inch collector needs a 3-inch downpipe to match. Mixing sizes with reducers kills the velocity advantage headers are meant to provide.

Muffler choice shapes the sound character significantly. A straight-through glasspack gives a loud, high-pitched note that suits a high-revving V8 but sounds thin on a torque-biased V6.
